What is hosting? And why do you need hosting? When you view a web page on your computer, you must first download the web page through the Internet. The downloaded web page comes from another computer that is also hooked up to the Internet. The computer that sends you the web page is called a "server." A hosting company can have anywhere from one to thousands of servers, with each server being able to store one to thousands of different websites.
Before you can have a website on the Internet, you must first place your website pages on a server that is connected to the Internet. You could use your own personal computer as a server, but you would first need to learn how to install and maintain the server software that enables your computer to exchange information with other computers on the Internet, and too, you would have to leave your computer running twenty-four hours a day. Between the cost for electricity and repairs of your computer having to run constantly, it is almost always much cheaper to pay a hosting company for use of one of their servers, and too, you never have to worry about computer repairs or hackers getting into your computer.
During the past decade we have used numerous different hosting services whose costs ranged from free to over $30.00 per month. One thing we quickly discovered is that almost all hosting services change their hosting fees and services with time, and though a hosting service might be among the best today, it might not be as good next month.
If all you want is to build a personal website for friends and family, and you do not mind that search engines nor much of anyone else on the Internet will ever find your website, then free hosting might be useful. If you want your website to be listed on search engines, and you want your website to be found by customers and the general public, then a paid hosting service is very important.
Having a website can be a lot of fun, but there is more fun in not having to regularly maintain and update your own hosting accounts. For as little as $29.95 a year you can leave all of the hosting headaches to us.
